Creede OHV Club
Minutes of July 21, 2015

The July meeting of the Creede OHV Club was held in the Recreation Center of Mountain Views at River’s Edge RV Park. Jerre Guthals, President, called the meeting to order at 7:07 PM on July 21, 2015.  Jerre welcomed everyone present and thanked Roland Zimmerman and his wife Helen for having the meeting and furnishing the refreshments. Connie Guthals and Penny Newman were also thanked for furnishing the cookies. He also thanked Commissioner Don Hollenshead for setting up the meeting.

Since there were a large number of guests not familiar with the club, Jerre briefly stated the club’s purpose to get more ATV access to trails in the Rio Grande National Forest and to promote safe ATV activities. He stated that we are a volunteer club that clears and repairs the forest ATV trails. He told about the grants the club has obtained from the Parks registration fund to build Fern Creek Trail and repair Lost Trail Creek Trail.  He said that the local forest had limited resources since Forest Service Funds were largely sent to more populated areas.

Jerre told the meeting that the County has tried to help motorized sports in this area, but the city of Creede and the Forest Service not so much. He encouraged guests to go to Forest Service Planning meetings and ask for more and wider motorized trails and to send in written comments during the forest plan comment period.  Also, they should put pressure on Creede businesses to allow ATVs on city streets.

The minutes from the last meeting were read. The sign-in sheet was passed around for those present to sign. The Treasurer’s report from Linda Martin indicated that there is currently $2778.22 in the club bank account. Transactions included $123 deposit of membership dues and $200 payment to Kentucky Bell for Forest Service toilet paper for the campgrounds.
Trails Report – Jerre reported that all forest trails and roads are open except the Carson road between Carson and Cinnamon Pass road. This was due to a mud and rockslide over road. Jerre provided a list of motorized trails in the area to anyone who wanted one.
Commissioner Don Hollenshead spoke to the group about the county’s history fighting with the Forest Service over road closures. Roads mentioned were Kid Peaks Road, Emerald Ranch to Nelson Mountain Road, and Last Chance Mine Road. He also reported progress with City Council over allowing ATVs in Creede.  Maybe soon.  He was told of the road washout above Gold Dust Ranch and encouraged those present to report road problems to the county to get repair done.

Old Business
The Toilet paper for the Forest Service campgrounds has been purchased and delivered to Dennis.
Connie Guthals reported that the books from the old school library have been packed for new school library. The remaining unwanted books will be available to the public on July 29 at old library.

New Business
The question was asked, “How much are your club dues and what are they used for?”  Jerre answered that the dues were $20 per family and were used to pay club expenses, for club cookouts, and travel expenses for preparation and presentation of trail grants.
Enquiry was made if current trail status and upcoming Forest Service Class dates were posted on our club web site creedeohvclub. com .  Jerre responded that he would try to see that these items were kept up to date.
